Blessed to live in British Columbia, Canada I can travel a couple of hours and be high in the mountains or kayaking on the open ocean, completely alone either way. Complete solitude. You can leave Vancouver and be literally lost in the mountains, yet still hear the city. The wilderness is always close, the danger closer still.

Spending time in the Coquihalla Summit recreation area is a favourite of mine in the winters. There’s always plenty of snow and plenty of peace, And I rarely see anyone along the way. There’s always cars in the lower parking lots but somehow the mountiains quietly absorb everyone. People disappear and dissolve into the landscape. Only their tracks remind me that anyone has been here.
